Wrath of Man (2021) Blu-ray Review: The Basics -- Video Review

Wrath of Man is an awesome movie, lots of tension, and I was impressed by how good it is. Warner Bros decided to release this on Blu-ray only, and not a 4K. So how's it look on Blu-ray?

The first thing that's obvious to my eyes is that it's been oversharpened some. Slight edge enhancement is visible, and ringing is also visible around faces and hard objects. I don't like this, I think it's unnecessary, it makes the image look overly gritty, why? Sure, Blu-ray doesn't have the resolution and detail that 4K has, but that doesn't mean that you raise the sharpness to try and match a 4K image. This is 1080p, so let 1080p be 1080p. I also say this for 4K, because sometimes movies studios even oversharpen 4K content, and I think that this is completely wrong.

The ringing is made worse from the excessive edge enhancement used. Again, I don't like it, and I've seen better. I'm going to contact Warner Bros about this. I don't have much investment (so to speak) in Blu-ray, but Blu-ray can look better than this, and should look better IMO. Even Blu-ray vs streaming should look better if it's done right, and I will always do whatever I can to improve the state of Physical Media.

The colors are natural-looking, and I really like the look. However, Blu-ray really struggles with many of the color fades and tones. There are bit-depth issues around faces and shadows. Blu-ray has 8-bit color and this where 10-bit video from the 4K format would have really helped. There is minor banding, but to be fair that was just at the start, with digital logos. For Blu-ray it's acceptable, but not in the same league as 4K video.

Film grain breaks into noise slightly, it's not perfect film grain. The film grain is probably digitally added. I believe that the added sharpness I talked about earlier is having an impact on the encoding here. The disc needs a higher bit-rate to resolve this issue, plain and simple.

Overall? A fairly average-looking movie on Blu-ray. For it being this new I was expecting more TBH. The movie has been slightly oversharpened and exhibits viable ringing around objects. It has a gritty look, which is fine, but it needs a higher bit-rate to make this look better.

VIDEO SCORE: 4 OUT OF 5

THE BASICS: NEEDS A 4K RELEASE:)

Audio: The Basics

Wrath of Man (2021) Blu-ray Review: The Basics -- Audio Review

Wrath of Man only has a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix. It's fully uncompressed which is great, but no Atmos/DTSX at this point in the game is kinda odd to me.

Dialogue is mixed well and is well recorded. The balance of voices is excellent, and I can't ask for more.

There's some deep bass in the movie, but it has no power. It's more of a progressive sound, vs all-out power.

The score for the movie is very good. It's progressive and tension-building. I personally love it.

Overall? I like the sound, and what's being attempted, but it's not a showcase. There's nothing here that makes me want to show this movie off. It's nothing flashy, but with that said, I like how it's presented and reminds me very much of Heat.

AUDIO SCORE: 4 OUT OF 5

THE BASICS: GREAT SCORE

HOW I REVIEW THE BASICS

I just write what I see, nothing super in-depth; just what I see. Do I see noise in the blacks? Edge enhancement? Digital Issues? Scaling Problem? I will let you know if I see any errors in the discs, and explain how good they really look. Same with the audio; a very simple review method. I have no agenda other than finding and reporting what I see and hear. My reviews will not get a reference certificate unless it's flawless, and I will not be giving out 5/5 video/audio without merit. I'm going to keep this really simple, and I hope you enjoy that side of my Reviews. Thank you.
