Story: The Basics

When a dizzying robbery takes place in the Orthodox Jewish diamond district, a flawless 86-carat gem, the size of an infant's fist, is lifted in the snatch. Taking it to London, the diamond's thief and courier, Franky Four Fingers arrives in the city as a stopover en route to New York to deliver the huge diamond to his bigwig crime boss, Avi. But because Franky can't resist temptation and London is a town with its share of illegal trade, a small crowd of miscreants and malefactors eventually ends up chasing each other and the whereabouts of the diamond. These include: Doug the Head, a jeweler who pretends he's Jewish because it's good for business; Boris the Blade, a Russian gangster with a deserved reputation for being impossible to kill; Bullet Tooth Tony, a legendary hard guy and Brick Top, perhaps the scariest of the lot.
Director: Guy Ritchie

Video: The Basics

I haven't had many great things to say about Sony's 4K transfers lately. I've read some other reviews and some people haven't seemed to notice their recent slew of low bit-rates. I contacted Sony about their bit-rates being low. They've been in the '50s and '60 Mbps, and I don't think that they've looked good. Does this trend continue with Snatch 4K? Let's see.
Snatch on 4K looks really good. I can safely say that Sony has pumped their bit-rates up by 20 to 30 Mbps and it's honestly made a huge difference, it's easy to see. Film grain no longer breaks up into noise, this is great to see. The bit-rates are now in the 80 Mbps average range, and this yields a very good transfer.
The biggest thing with bit-rates like this is that the movie never looks digital. The movie looks like film, and that's all I want for Physical transfers. I'm happy with this.
A few things I noticed. I saw a couple of scenes that had slightly raised sharpness. May have been just been a poor quality negative or something, because the rest of the movie was super smooth.
There is minor ringing around hard objects, but nothing that stands out. Edge and ringing are handled really well, and I'm happy about this.
A couple of scenes had pretty low light output. It's not crushing blacks or anything like that. But, when you go into a dark room after being in the sun for so long, that's how some scenes look. This is a camera problem, and not a transfer problem, so I'll forgive it some, but I'm wondering if the color grading may have needed a pinch more work in HDR. I think sticking to an "unaltered" presentation was the goal here, and they have achieved that.
The colors are drab, and lifeless, which is the original intent of the director. This doesn't look particularly good from a visual point of view, but I respect the approach. It's not a 4K color visual show-case I'll be honest.
Overall? A very good transfer. I think Sony are back, and I hope that this type of quality continues. The film grain looks great, with no digital noise. It's very good and highly recommended.
VIDEO SCORE: 4.5 OUT OF 5
THE BASICS: VERY GOOD TRANSFER
Audio: The Basics

Snatch Ultra HD has had the Dolby Atmos treatment and it's really good. This is one thing Sony has always delivered, great audio.
Dialogue is loud and well recorded. It's balanced perfectly, and voices are always clear. This excellent.
There's some great Surround Sound and Dolby Atmos moments. The bank/diamond robbery at the start throws a lot of sounds everywhere, this is fun. It must be great to play with Dolby's immersive audio, this is pretty cool. There's many more scenes like this.
The music in the film is simply excellent and has also got some Dolby action. Music has more presence than it did before. You can hear music coming from particular points in the room. Minor echo's and reverbs can be heard. Great little touches like this are great to hear.
Overall? A great Atmos upgrade. It's not an all-out blockbuster, but I respect what Sony has done here. It's very good. Well done and recommended.
